What is a Momprenuer?

(BUILT IN) (Icons/Graphics) LadyBlogger.jpgA mompreneur is a mom who establishes her business at home while also acting as the full time parent of their children. The mompreneur movement is rapidly growing as more mothers try to find ways to make money at home either due to lay-offs or the desire to stay at home and set their own hours. There are many books and websites out there devoted to giving advice to the mompreneur including topics on business opportunities, creating a business plan, networking, and the challenges of balancing work and family.

Over the next several months, we will be devoting ourselves to digging up such resources to share them with you. We want to hear from you. As the majority of our readers are moms, we want to hear about your experiences. Are you working from home? What are your challenges? How did you decide what business to go into? Submit your comments and one lucky mom will get the opportunity to advertise with us for one year for FREE and be profiled as our Spotlight MOM OF THE MONTH.

Tips for Working From Home

1. Get up and Go to Work

(BUILT IN) (Icons/Graphics) AlarmClock.jpgSet you alarm and get up just as if you were commuting to a job. Get a shower and get dressed. This puts you in the proper mindset and less time will be wasted. "Pretend that your next client might ring your doorbell at anytime" says Charleen Hilton (Votre Vu)

2. Create a Space

(BUILT IN) (Icons/Graphics) LaptopComputer.jpgMake sure you designate a space in your home that is just for your work. This means having the supplies and equipment needed as well as ample work space. Having a dedicated work space will help you get in the zone when it comes time to get to work, says Angee Robertson (Sheic Space) Visit SheicSpace.com to view profiles of creative and effective work spaces.

3. Make a To-Do List

(BUILT IN) (Icons/Graphics) Text_ToDoList.jpgEvery morning before you get the kids up for school or the night before, take a few minutes to write down what you want to accomplish during the day. I like to be as detailed as possible with a very long list. This way, I can sometimes check off more than one thing at a time and no details are left undone. I have found this helps me stay on track and actually feel like I've accomplished something as I check off every item on my to-do list.

4. Think Efficiency

In other words, group similar activities together. Don't check your email all day, check it two or 3 times a day (at most) and answer all the emails at the same time. When you want to make changes to your website, list them all and wait until you need to make several changes at once. Group similar calls together - make sales calls in one hour, follow up calls another, etc.

5. Have a clear purpose when you use the computer

(BUILT IN) (Icons/Graphics) LadyonComputer.jpgWhenever you go to your computer, have a definite purpose in mind. It helps to keep a list with you always of goals and to-do lists in it, all in once place. This helps prevent you from aimlessly checking email or surfing Facebook and getting lost. Know what you need to accomplish, write it down, do it, and move on to the next activity.
